How Tamitos Was Born: The Heartfelt Origin of an Autism-Inspired Brand
How Tamitos Was Born
Tamitos was created by us - a mom and dad who simply couldn’t stand by while our daughter, Tamia, struggled to be understood. Tamia is autistic. She’s wonderfully curious, deeply sensitive to sound, and sees the world through a lens that many people don’t take the time to understand. Her joy can be pure magic, but the world around her isn’t always built to embrace that magic. There were moments when we saw her withdraw, not because she didn’t want to connect, but because the noise — both literal and metaphorical - became too much. We didn’t want to change who she is. We wanted to change the world around her. So we started building a space where she could feel safe, celebrated, and understood.
What does “Tamitos” mean?
The name “Tamitos” comes from our daughter’s name Tamia. But it’s more than just a name. In our world, the “Tamitos” are companions: sometimes helpers, sometimes protectors, and sometimes the very challenges she faces every day. They represent both the beauty and the struggles that come with living in a world that isn’t always designed for neurodiversity.
More than just a project
Tamitos isn’t a business idea that came from a boardroom. It’s our personal journey. It’s a mission born from the daily reality of parenting a child with autism. And it’s not just for our daughter. It’s for every child who processes the world differently. It’s for every parent who has fought to get the right support, who has sat in waiting rooms for therapy sessions, who has been told “there’s nothing more we can do.” It’s for families who are learning to navigate the beauty and the complexity of autism.
Our why...
From the very beginning, Tamitos has been about more than creating toys, stories, or products. It’s about spreading awareness, building empathy, and offering real help. Sometimes that help looks like education. Sometimes it’s comfort in the form of a soft companion. And sometimes it’s simply creating a moment of joy in an otherwise overwhelming day. This is our daughter’s world and now, we’re inviting you into it.
