Where to get help with autism in Slovakia

If you suspect autism in your child in Slovakia, start with your paediatrician and the district Centre for Counselling and Prevention (Centrum poradenstva a prevencie). The clinical diagnosis is made by a child psychiatrist or clinical psychologist, and specialist centres such as ACVA in Bratislava or Autistické centrum Andreas. After diagnosis, regional non profit organisations, early intervention services and state benefits take over.

Here is the whole chain, in the order you will actually need it.

Step one: paediatrician and the district counselling centre

If your child does not respond to their name, does not follow your gaze, does not point, has lost words they already had, or is developing differently from peers, do not wait for the next routine check up.

1. Paediatrician. Describe exactly what you see and bring a short video from an ordinary day. The paediatrician screens and writes the referral.
2. Centre for Counselling and Prevention (CPP) in your district. Free of charge, part of the education system, and since the 2023 reform they replaced the former CPPPaP centres. They do psychological and special education assessment and write the paperwork for school support and for deferring school entry.
3. Child psychiatrist or clinical psychologist. This is where the referral leads. The autism spectrum diagnosis itself is made by a doctor.

Important: do not wait for the paperwork before starting support. Speech therapy, early intervention and the work you do at home do not require a diagnosis.

Where to get an autism diagnosis in Slovakia

Waiting times and conditions differ a lot between centres and they change. Put your child on several waiting lists at once and confirm the terms directly with the centre rather than with a parent forum.

Early intervention: support for children under seven

This is the most underused service in Slovakia. Early intervention centres come to your home, work with the child and with the parents, are registered social services and are free for the family. You do not need a completed diagnosis, a health disadvantage or a risk of developmental delay is enough.

School, nursery and deferred entry

After the diagnosis comes the second wave of paperwork, this time from the education system.

• Support measures at school. The documentation is written by the Centre for Counselling and Prevention. A child can have a teaching assistant, an adjusted curriculum or an individual education plan.
• Deferring compulsory school attendance. It is not automatic and it is not a failure.
• Special class or special school. Bratislava and Prešov have schools built specifically for autistic children, elsewhere the route is inclusion in a mainstream school.
• Moving into a new class. Prepare the classmates, not only your child. We wrote about how in How to talk to children about autism naturally and sensitively.

Benefits and what to claim

The Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family (ÚPSVaR) in your place of permanent residence handles:

• the severe disability card (ZŤP), which unlocks further entitlements and discounts,
• the care allowance, if you care for your child and cannot work as before,
• the personal assistance allowance, which pays an assistant for the hours set in the assessment,
• compensation allowances, for example for transport or equipment.

The whole process rests on the medical assessment, and that rests on the quality of your medical reports. Collect and copy everything from day one. Amounts and conditions change every year, so verify them on the ÚPSVaR website or at the office rather than in older articles.

Finding a community

The sentence we hear most often from parents is not about therapy. It is that the world around them quietly emptied. We wrote about it in Why families of autistic children withdraw from society.

What works: parent peer groups run by the regional organisations above, closed parent groups on social media where you can ask without explaining first, camps that include siblings, and the awareness events every April.

Private therapy, ABA programmes and some diagnostic centres charge fees. Conditions vary, so check directly with the provider.

How long is the wait for an assessment? Waiting times differ significantly between regions and centres and are commonly measured in months. Register at several places at once and start speech therapy and early intervention in the meantime, since neither requires a diagnosis.

Where do you turn once the child is an adult? To SPOSA, the regional autism centres and specialist social service facilities. The assessment and education regimes both change at the transition to adulthood, so start a year ahead rather than on the eighteenth birthday.
